The Jurassic Azabache de Asturias, a scarce and unique mineral

The geological rarity of the Asturian gem that makes a difference

It is an anomalo coal formed from extinct tree trunks, of the Jurassic era, fossilized under very specific conditions, giving rise to a rare and scarce gem.

These characteristics are responsible for the exceptional stability of jet, that implies its degradation over time and that differentiates it from its imitators, lignitos.

The Azabache and its Culture are fundamental part of the history of Asturias. From the Paleolithic there are already evidence that it was a highly appreciated material, the oldest pieces being found in Oviedo, in the Cueva de las Caldas.

Currently the mines are closed. There is no legalized extraction of Ezabache and mining concessions are expired.

The intrusion in the market of other materials usurping the space of jet, much cheaper and easier to achieve, does not facilitate at all the possible opening of a mine.

This is stated by María Pérez, president of the Jurassic Association of Villaviciosa. This association brings together a group of professionals, not only artisans, who defend and support the jet.

In the headquarters they have in Villaviciosa you can see an exhibition decoration and jewelry deposits, since this gem is considered a semi -precious piece widely used in jewelry.

Traditionally these pieces of jewelry were used as amulet against the evil eye, so it is not strange that visitors who come to this Asturian town end up taking the famous pendant of the jet or fist of luck.
