I remember when I got my first piercing. I was 15 years old and I went with my two best friends, after high school, to the only tattoo parlor that we knew and that we dared to enter. We were totally in love with the guys who worked there and who, of course, were older than us, painted graffiti all over the city and had tattoos from top to bottom. They were friends of the older boys from the park we used to go to (we liked them too) and our faces were familiar to them from the neighborhood. They liked us, they were nice and, although they could suspect that we did not have the 16 compliments, they did not ask us for the ID when we told them that we wanted to get a piercing.

My friends did it to their tongues, I did it to their noses. There were many types of piercings at the time. Theirs was easier to hide than mine, but I figured the little stud with a sparkle I chose wouldn't piss my mom off as much as a hoop. My mother hated her nose rings, she said they looked like the ones they put on cows. When she saw me when I got home, the only thing she said to me was “if you were going to do it anyway, you could have told me”. She was right, so by the time she wanted to get a second hole in my ear, I asked her to come with me and she did.
