[Exclusive] A day in Santiago Nieto's bunker

A spiral staircase with thick steps connects the office of Santiago Nieto, today head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), with a certain number of servers that so far store five billion data on subjects who could be susceptible to investigation by unusual financial operations, linked to money laundering, financing of terrorism or for the proliferation of possession or sale of weapons of mass destruction.

The FIU headquarters is a sober, muted-colored building that passes through a simple office complex. Its furniture is austere and there are practically no windows. Outsiders are prohibited from using cell phones and any electronic device, which is retained at the entrance, as in the United States Embassy in Mexico.
